Early years
In our kindergarten in Rawang, students are introduced to a rich language curriculum that includes English, Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin. Weekly lessons in Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin support early language development alongside teaching in English as the primary language of instruction. This early exposure lays the groundwork for proficiency in multiple languages.
Primary and Secondary School
As students progress through the primary and secondary stages, they expand their language learning to include English, Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin, with additional support from three EAL tiered programmes. EAL classes are taught by experienced native-speaking teachers who provide tailored support to students for whom English is not their first language. Weekly lessons in Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin further enhance students' linguistic skills and cultural understanding, ensuring they become fluent in multiple languages.
Through a rich mix of language experiences, we help students build the skills and resilience they need to thrive.
At Straits International School in Tamansari, Rawang, students receive expert English as an Additional Language (EAL) support from native-speaking teachers. This support is specifically tailored for students whose first language is not English. These lessons run alongside regular English classes and follow the Cambridge English curriculum.
As part of the Early Years Foundation Stage, students undergo personalised language assessments to document their progress, including their language development. Teachers use these profiles to recognise strengths and pinpoint areas requiring additional support.
Students at SIS Rawang actively participate in co-curricular activities and ISP programmes, gaining valuable language experience in the process. These programmes enable students to develop their language and communication skills, apply their classroom learning in practical situations and forge international friendships, all within a safe and supportive environment.
I like Straits International School because we are very diverse and we appreciate many different cultures which makes our school unique.
